SUMMARY:In Dialogue: John Gasiewski and Paul DelGrosso
DESCRIPTION:In Dialogue\n\nJohn Gasiewski\nPaul DelGrosso\n\nFeaturing John Gasiewski and Paul DelGrosso\nThe Estrangement Epidemic: Schema Therapy and the Challenges\, and Opportunities\, of Estrangement\nTuesday\, November 10\, 2026 · 12:00–1:00 PM ET · Held live inside the JYSTA community on Mighty\nHosted by Travis Atkinson\, LCSW\, VP of Media & Communications\, JYSTA\nOrganized by Rita Younan\, VP of Events\, JYSTA \nAbout John and Paul’s Symposium Session\nSeen through the lens of schema therapy\, estrangement can reflect challenges for some patients and healthy limit setting for others. \nOver one in four Americans reported being estranged from a relative in a recent nationwide survey (Pillemer\, 2020)\, and the pattern may hold outside the US as well (Blake\, 2015). The deprivation and isolation created by cutoffs with family members can have a lasting impact on patients’ lives\, and it needs to be addressed in our work with them. \nEstrangement is often explored in terms of how it happens and its impact\, holding out the hope of reconciliation (Coleman\, 2020; Pillemer\, 2020). Schema therapy surfaces a more nuanced picture. The specific schemas and modes involved\, in patients and in the important people in their lives\, don’t always point to estrangement as the problem. \nJohn and Paul look at conditions in which estrangement leads to challenging schema activation\, and conditions in which it acts as a protective factor. They cover treatment pathways to heal estrangement within the client\, using schema therapy\, and with clients and estranged family members\, using schema therapy and attachment-based family therapy. They also look at when\, and if\, reconciliation can take place. \nHow the Conversation Works\nJohn and Paul interview each other. Paul questions John about his part of the presentation in the first half\, and John questions Paul in the second. \nHow to Take Part\n\nRegister in advance. This one is for JYSTA members. Registration is inside the JYSTA community on Mighty.\nWatch John and Paul’s symposium session. We are opening their full symposium presentation to members on Mighty in the days ahead. Watch it before November 10.\nSend your questions. After watching\, send them to us and we will bring them into the room with John and Paul.\n\nThe conversation joins the In Dialogue library afterward\, so members who cannot attend live get it. \nLearning Outcomes for Mental Health Clinicians\n\nDescribe schema and mode combinations that call for an attempt to bridge estrangement to allow for schema healing\nDescribe schema and mode combinations that call for supporting estrangement to allow for schema healing\nDifferentiate between the need for full and partial estrangement (limit setting) with patients and their family and friends\nExplain treatment pathways to heal estrangement within the client (using schema therapy) and with clients and estranged family members (using schema therapy and attachment-based family therapy)

SUMMARY:In Dialogue: Lynda Parry with Rita Younan
DESCRIPTION:In Dialogue\n   \nFeaturing Lynda Parry with Rita Younan\nSchemas of the Night: Phantom or Real?\nMonday\, November 16\, 2026 · 5:00–6:00 PM ET (Tuesday\, November 17\, 9:00–10:00 AM in Sydney and Melbourne) · Held live inside the JYSTA community on Mighty\nHosted by Travis Atkinson\, LCSW\, VP of Media & Communications\, JYSTA\nOrganized by Rita Younan\, VP of Events\, JYSTA \nAbout Lynda’s Symposium Session\nDream material can give access to schemas\, particularly the unconditional schemas of early childhood\, that may be difficult for clients to emotionally connect with in sessions. Lynda presents research from neurobiology\, sleep\, and memory studies to explain how this happens\, and why the dreaming process is thought to be critical to memory consolidation\, particularly in connecting current events with past experience. \nHer case study of working with a client’s dream shows how to connect the therapist’s in-depth knowledge of the client’s schemas and modes\, from the case conceptualisation\, with dream material. Exploring the dream through the emotion-focused techniques of schema therapy can open a connection with the Vulnerable Child mode\, often for the first time\, along with emotional expression of the schemas. \nLynda brings the session into conversation with Rita Younan on November 16. This session runs on a Monday evening in the US so members in Australia and Asia can join live. \nHow to Take Part\n\nRegister in advance. This one is for JYSTA members. Registration is inside the JYSTA community on Mighty.\nWatch Lynda’s symposium session. We are opening her full symposium presentation to members on Mighty in the days ahead. Watch it before November 16.\nSend your questions.
